What Causes Premature Ejaculation and How Can I Stop It?

It’s actually something that can affect men of all ages, for a variety of reasons. Here we look at what causes premature ejaculation and what you can do to prevent it.

What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation happens when ejaculation happens sooner that you – or your partner – would like. Specifically, experts say this means you:

  • Always or nearly always ejaculate within one minute of penetration,
  • Are unable to delay ejaculation all or nearly all of the time, or
  • You feel distressed and frustrated and, as a result, avoid sex.

In other words, if premature ejaculation happens every now and again, it can be annoying, but it’s not a serious issue. However, if it happens more often than not, it makes sex less enjoyable, and affects your relationship, premature ejaculation can be cause for concern.

And, it’s a concern that’s not unique. It’s been found that one out of three men ages 18 to 59 experiences issues surrounding premature ejaculation at any given time.

What causes premature ejaculation?

There are many causes of premature ejaculation, and they range among what’s going on mentally and physically.

Psychological issues. Premature ejaculation can often stem from early sexual experiences that affect how men perform throughout their lives. Sources say having to orgasm before being discovered or having feelings of guilt or shame about sex as a young man can linger into adulthood.

Other contributing psychological factors include stress and anxiety, which can have a compounding, circular effect: You may experience stress, which makes you climax early, and then find that continuing to climax early only adds to your stress.

Relationship issues. Another cause for premature ejaculation can involve relationships issues. Unresolved conflicts or feelings of resentment or anger toward your partner can manifest in your sexual performance.

Biological issues. Finally, premature ejaculation can be caused by physical issues. These can include:

  • Abnormal hormone levels or levels of neurotransmitters in the brain
  • Abnormal reflexes of the ejaculatory system
  • Thyroid problems
  • Inflammation or infection of the prostate or the urethra
  • Nerve damage caused by surgery or trauma

Premature ejaculation can also be caused by erectile dysfunction. Experts say men might experience anxiety or stress in trying to keep an erection longer, and thus might form a pattern of “rushing to ejaculate.”

It’s important to remember that if your sexual activities are regularly ending before you’re ready, it can be the result of any of these causes of premature ejaculation, either on their own or in combination.

What you can do.

The good news is that there are natural remedies available. And sources indicate 95% of men who experience premature ejaculation are helped by behavioral techniques that improve control. These techniques include:

Stop and start. This simply involves stopping stimulation of your penis right at the point you’re about to orgasm. You take a break from arousal for about 30 seconds or until the feeling passes. Then you begin again, and repeat the process until you’re both ready.

Squeeze. You can also add a squeeze technique to this, which involves squeezing the head of your penis at the point when you’re about to orgasm, which diminishes the erection. Then you begin arousal again, and once more squeeze when you’re about to ejaculate. This “trains” your body to hold back until you’re ready.

Do pelvic and penis exercises. Another strategy is to do exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor, which can help improve control. One popular exercise is the Kegel, which involves tightening the muscles you would use to hold back urine midstream.
